This is the story of the Miller family, Jack, Amy, and their sons Kenny and Danny. Separated by half a continent after an EMP attack sends the United States back to the Stone Age, the Millers are desperate to reunite as they struggle to survive.

Jack Miller isn’t too worried about the apocalypse. He has been prepping for a few years and has a basement stocked with the food and supplies his family needs to ride out a disaster. Today though, he is out of town on a business trip. An EMP strike delivered by a rogue nation leaves him stranded over a thousand miles away from his home. This is the last place he expected to be during a disaster. He sets out on an epic journey home armed only with his know how and survival skills. What he encounters leaves him questioning how prepared any lone man can be.

Amy Miller is all set to enjoy a well deserved vacation day. She’s a hard working mother of two with a full time career and rarely has a quiet moment to herself. The EMP throws a wrench in the works and leaves her unprepared for the chaos to follow. With the city falling down around her ears, she is pushed to the limit. Her suburban home is well stocked with supplies, but she clings to the hope that order will be restored. Faced with the darker side of humanity, will she overcome her inhibitions and do whatever it takes to protect her family?

The Journey Home An EMP Survival Story EMP Aftermath Series Book 1 eBook John Winchester

This is a story that will definitely keep you in suspense. Jack is a prepper who has collected lots of 'stuff' and has put in hours of study . He thought he was prepared for any disaster but reality has suddenly slapped him up side the head and his shortcomings have become glaringly clear. Home is over a thousand miles away and Jack has little more than determination to get him home. Will Jack make it home to his family? Will his wife wise up before her naiveté gets the family killed? I can't wait for the story to continue and read more about my favorite characters, Wyatt and Kenny!

Note: Yes, there are quite a few typos (like 'his' instead of 'this') but they don't distract from how good this story is. The only question I have is what happened to the neighbors, Dan and Mary?

The Journey Home An EMP Survival Story EMP Aftermath Series Book 1 eBook John Winchester Reviews

This story was frustrating to read. The timeline is sporadic at best. The main characters are weak and the events they go through are unbelievable.

Spoilers to follow
The wife is pathetic. She had the courage to leave her home to go get her youngest son across town but allowed her vehicle to be taken away. Then she and her oldest son go into a store, that is being looted, to get running attire so they could run for a couple of hours through the chaos to get her to the youngest son. Then all three run for hours to get back home. That's amazing, especially for the youngest boy.

You're led to believe that the husband, Jack, has been prepping for years but you wouldn't know by the mistakes he makes walking. Then he turns into some kind of super human able to walk for hours then pedal a bike towing a trailer with supplies and another person, Wyatt, in it. Then he gets the crap beat out of him, including hit in the head with a brick, but miraculously regains consciousness within minutes to run through the streets to catch up with the two guys, kill them and get his bike back.

Somehow Wyatt ended up going to a nursing home where his mother was instead of going to his home where his girlfriend and son were?.

On top of all of that, and many other glaring inconsistencies, the sentence structure, grammar and spelling are horrid. Man! Get an editor or, at the very least, a proofreader.
This could have been a good story if more time was taken to develop the characters and the story so that the book was well rounded and had a flow to it. It just seemed hurried.
What an awesome story from this author!
This kind of reading, just does not get any better. Thank you !
I've always loved natural disasters .. always. And I will always remember what got me started reading this type of genre .. the classic Alas Babylon. I purchased this book a several weeks ago, and placed it in my ' want to read at some point ' list of books, to eventually read. And what a mistake that was. The Journey Home had me at page 1, nor did the story ever slow down for me.
For me.. this series is pure enjoyment to read.. It is about a family that has to learn to survive when an EMP strikes, shutting down all modern life as everyone knows it.. no electricity, no internet, no cell phone.. and a much more different way to live their life now.
I absolutely loved reading about Jack Miller, as well as the rest of his family.. and of what Jack needs to do and must do, to safely reach his family..
One of the best things about this story is even though the grid is down, and the world is in chaos.. the author continues to tell his story as a means of a family unity.. and of learning. Yes, there are some ' bad guys ' in this book, but neither is it FULL of neighborhood gang take-overs, or a government military siege. It is just about a family re-learning their life values, and how to survive from them.

I am so glad I read this book, that as soon as I finished this one.. I went right into Desperate Measures, and now will begin this evening with his newest release, Retribution.
So go and grab your copies of all three books, you will not regret it.
This book was a page turner and I had difficulty putting it down. The pace was fast when it needed to be fast, and slow when slow was appropriate. I have read over 100 of the SHTF type books, none of them being zombie books. I lean towards books with people trying to get to a destination to discover how they handle different situations and the whole travel scenario. This book was a new twist in that the author didn't get bogged down with filler material of someone's personal hygiene routine, clean boxer shorts, what they cooked, where they bought a specific item and what the item was, etc. I found the predicaments that both sides of the Miller family faced to be reasonable and very possible in a SHTF collapse. The climax of the book, the last couple of chapters, was extremely well written and I couldn't stop reading until I finished the book. I would recommend this book without reservation and I hope to read more from this author. I am sure I will reread this book it is that good!!

Yes, as mentioned by others, there are some incomplete sentences, and misspelled words. Sometimes a word was spelled correctly, but t was the wrong word. Using confident instead of confidant would be an example. Minor errors aside, this is an excellent book and well worth the price.
I'm by no means an English professor but if I'm sending out a professional letter, I take the time to have a second pair of eyes check it for errors. This book had a good story but felt like it was an unedited first draft, rushed out to meet a deadline. There were sentences with words flipped around backwards, incomplete sentences to name a couple of the common mishaps. I'll have to pass on the second book, it was just too painful.
