Storytelling is an ancient human tradition, and the folktale is an art form. Before the written word was established as the accepted form of recording events, the story was the primary tool for passing information from one clan to another and from one generation to the next. Many folktales have lived well beyond the original family or historic origin and have cycled themselves into a new and inquisitive generation of listeners and tellers. My Speckled Tales and Other Dimensions is a compilation of stories written by a patriotic citizen, proud of her Lithuanian descent, and is truly representative of this ageless tradition. By recollecting things past with a keen memory and a loving heart, Eve Bates has enriched us all with a valuable and moving record.
Some of the stories are taken from real-life situations, such as “The Jacques Cousteau Interview.” “No Schtick Nose in Dat T’ing” chronicles the family’s involvement in the Charles Lindbergh kidnapping case of 1932, which reveals why many in the nation, in addition to those involved in the actual case, suffered shattered nerves. Other tales are based upon poignant personal memories from Ms Bates’ life, such as “The Horror of Our Moving Day” and “A Christmas of Lasting Hope.”
Some yarns were written purely for her own entertainment “The Room with a Hole in the Floor” and “Cousin Julie’s Ghost Story of Red Hill.” There are also some highly fictionalized plots inspired by memories and recollections “Who Stole Howie’s Fish?” and “The Storm That Drove Us Out.” The chilling saga concerning her brother’s four years on Saipan during WWII, “Who Wants to See Saipan Again?” is told as a first-person soliloquy by the protagonist and reveals a tragic and personal war story. Some stories have scholarly value, such as the unusual origins of the English word talk. The only word, and one of the most important words in the English language, that allegedly derives from the Lithuanian language is explained in “The Tulkas.” There are also humorous accounts to tickle one’s funny bone, such as “The Farm Is No Place for Bunglers, Boozers, or Boobs,” which was taken from real-life observations.
All proceeds from the sale of her books go to a Memorial Fund at Rutgers University in honor of Eve's Lithuanian-American farming parents.
